Naomi Scott, who had a breakout performance as Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin, is set to co-star with Hamilton star Anthony Ramos in Amblin Partners’ upcoming comedic sci-fi film Distant. Scott joins the film after the withdrawal of Rachel Brosnahan, who had to part ways with the project due to scheduling conflicts with production on the next season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film tells the story of an asteroid miner who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor – a woman who is trapped in her escape pod. Blades of Glory directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon will direct. Spenser Cohen penned the spec script.
Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger and Anna Halberg will produce. Speck and Gordon will also serve as executive producers, along with Jonathan Rothbart and Matt Hirsch. Kevin Vafi will co-produce. Jeb Brody, Amblin Partner’s President of Production, and John Buderwitz, Creative Executive, will oversee for the studio.
After making her film debut in Lionsgate’s Power Rangers pic, Scott beat out a number of individuals for the coveted role of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin. The film impressed fans and critics alike, not only because of her acting chops but also her singing skills. The film went on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and put Scott on everyone’s radar — including Elizabeth Banks, who would quickly tap her as one of the new stars of Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot.
Scott is repped by WME, Echo Lake Entertainment and Sloane, Offer.

Naomi Scott, who portrayed Princess Jasmine in 2019’s Aladdin, says she would love to play a Disney villain. After starring in the 2019 live action musical fantasy film, which is the re-imagination of the 1992 animated classic from Walt Disney Pictures, Naomi wants to go bad on screen.
“I would love to actually play a Disney villain! Although this wouldn’t work for me, I would love to play Cruella De Vil. She is not a nice person but so much fun to play, so I would probably love to play a Disney villain,” she said. But she enjoyed playing Jasmine too. While shooting for the Guy Ritchie directorial, she had a moment where she was like “Wow! I am Jasmine!”
“There have been many moments from the get go. I remember when I met Will Smith. We were in a gym and they had like shower cubicles and I had showered, got ready and had put a towel on my head, had no make-up on, I walked out and he was like running up and down! I thought I am going to meet Will Smith.
“So, I just shouted ‘Will!’ And he like turned around and I realised I had such a long way to get to him. I was like this is going to be awkward as he has no idea who I am. He has just seen who is coming to him, who is like some random girl with a towel on her head. So I got to him and I said ‘Oh, I play Jasmine and he was like ‘oohhh!’,”she said.
“He is incredible and he doesn’t make you feel like a weirdo and then Guy Ritchie came and I was standing there with a towel on my head. Will Smith and Guy Ritchie there was like a treadmill and I was so perplexed I was like ‘What is my life?! This is incredible!’ So, there were many surreal moments even at the premiere. I was just like standing thinking ‘Wow! this is just amazing to be part of something so iconic’, I felt very blessed,” she added.
