Kit Harington, Naomi Scott, Jeremy Irons Romance Epic ‘Eternal Return’ to Hit Cannes Market (EXCLUSIVE)

“Aladdin” and “Charlie’s Angels” breakout Naomi Scott will star alongside “Game of Thrones” alum Kit Harrington and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons in the epic romance “Eternal Return,” Variety can report exclusively. Village Roadshow Pictures is producing the project and will introduce the film to buyers at next week’s Cannes Film Festival.

“Eternal Return” follows Cass (Scott), a young woman who has resigned herself to a life of emotional invulnerability until she meets Virgil (Harington), a cartographer who makes maps to imaginary places. Along with his partner Malcolm (Irons), a vibrant renaissance man, the pair relentlessly attempts to travel back in time to awaken Cass to love again. The original feature is written and directed by Yaniv Raz (“Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets”).

Jillian Apfelbaum, Tristen Tuckfield, and Nic Gordon are overseeing the project for Village Roadshow. They will produce alongside Scott and Jordan Spence’s New Name Entertainment. The in-house production is one of several that Village Roadshow, led by veteran executive Steve Mosko, has been cooking throughout the pandemic. Though the company has wide brand recognition, Village Roadshow was a passive film financier until Mosko landed at the shop in late 2018. Historically, it has had a hand in older performers like “Miss Congeniality” and “The Matrix” up to the recent Joaquin Phoenix box office juggernaut “Joker.”

With Mosko at helm, as well as lieutenants Apfelbaum and Tuckfield, VRP has focused on dexterity and a creative-first mission. With capitalization from majority owner Vine Alternative Investments, VRP can fully finance its projects and sell directly to the open market. They also remain a robust co-financier.

“We want to be nimble,” Mosko told Variety ahead of Cannes. “Despite what the consumer might think, this company hadn’t produced a movie for 25 years. We shot four this year, and have a ton of amazing stuff on the runway.”

Apfelbaum and Tuckfield have been recruiting rising and established filmmakers to explore both VRP’s intellectual property and original concepts. “We offer optionality to our filmmakers,” Apfelbaum added. “When the time comes, we can sell directly to streamers, to studios, or co-finance these projects.”

The company is already at work on a slate it calls Black Noir Cinema, a joint venture with NBA star Kevin Garnett meant to reinvigorate the inclusion and magic of Black movies from the 1970s. The first, a Pam Grier project called “Cinnamon,” is an official selection of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Also on deck: John Waters’ anticipated return to the director’s chair with an adaptation of his book “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance”; a new installment of “Night of the Living Dead” with MGM; an untitled biopic-ish project from comedian Taylor Tomlinson; and a reboot of the Sarah Jessica Parker classic “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” VRP has also been toying with its library title “Kingpin,” the 1996 Farrelly Brothers cult classic starring Woody Harrelson.

Raz, director of “Eternal Return,” is represented by Range Media Partners. Irons is represented by CAA, Harington is represented by UTA and United Agents, and Scott is represented by CAA, M88, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern and Narrative. Range Select will represent the domestic rights to “Eternal Return.”

Is ‘Distant’ Streaming on HBO Max or Netflix?

Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, Distant is the latest science fiction comedy film to hit the big screen.

Starring Anthony Ramos, Naomi Scott and Zachary Quinto, the movie follows asteroid miner Andy (Ramos) as his spaceship gets stuck and finds itself on an alien planet. Meanwhile, he connects with Naomi (Scott), a crew member trapped inside her pod, via radio, leading him on a journey to save her.

Where can you watch Distant? Will it be on HBO Max? What about Netflix? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:
WHERE TO WATCH DISTANT:
As of now, the only way to watch Distant is to head out to a theater when it premieres on Friday, Jan. 27. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available to rent or buy on digital platforms like Vudu, YouTube, Amazon and Apple or stream on Peacock. Read on for more information.

WHEN WILL DISTANT BE ON PEACOCK?
Since all Universal Pictures movies eventually make their way onto Peacock, we can estimate when you will be able to stream Distant from the comfort of your home.

Another Universal film, Violent Night, spent just over the 45-day average in theaters (49 days, to be exact) before making its way onto the streaming platform. If Distant follows the same trajectory, you should be able to stream it from your Peacock account by mid-March 2023.

WILL DISTANT BE ON HBO MAX?
No, Distant will not be on HBO Max because it’s not a Warner Bros. movie. While the company previously released its movies on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day, they have since stopped, and have implemented a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the streaming release.

WILL DISTANT BE ON NETFLIX?
No, Distant will not be available on Netflix — at least not any time soon, since it will be heading straight to Peacock after its theatrical release. In the meantime, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available on the NBCUniversal-owned streaming platform.

‘Aladdin”s Naomi Scott To Star Opposite Anthony Ramos in Amblin’s ‘Distant’

Naomi Scott, who had a breakout performance as Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin, is set to co-star with Hamilton star Anthony Ramos in Amblin Partners’ upcoming comedic sci-fi film Distant. Scott joins the film after the withdrawal of Rachel Brosnahan, who had to part ways with the project due to scheduling conflicts with production on the next season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film tells the story of an asteroid miner who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor – a woman who is trapped in her escape pod. Blades of Glory directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon will direct. Spenser Cohen penned the spec script.

Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger and Anna Halberg will produce. Speck and Gordon will also serve as executive producers, along with Jonathan Rothbart and Matt Hirsch. Kevin Vafi will co-produce. Jeb Brody, Amblin Partner’s President of Production, and John Buderwitz, Creative Executive, will oversee for the studio.

After making her film debut in Lionsgate’s Power Rangers pic, Scott beat out a number of individuals for the coveted role of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin. The film impressed fans and critics alike, not only because of her acting chops but also her singing skills. The film went on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and put Scott on everyone’s radar — including Elizabeth Banks, who would quickly tap her as one of the new stars of Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot.

Scott is repped by WME, Echo Lake Entertainment and Sloane, Offer.

‘Aladdin’ actress Naomi Scott wants to play villain in Disney movie.

Naomi Scott, who portrayed Princess Jasmine in 2019’s Aladdin, says she would love to play a Disney villain.

Naomi Scott, who portrayed Princess Jasmine in 2019’s Aladdin, says she would love to play a Disney villain. After starring in the 2019 live action musical fantasy film, which is the re-imagination of the 1992 animated classic from Walt Disney Pictures, Naomi wants to go bad on screen.

“I would love to actually play a Disney villain! Although this wouldn’t work for me, I would love to play Cruella De Vil. She is not a nice person but so much fun to play, so I would probably love to play a Disney villain,” she said. But she enjoyed playing Jasmine too. While shooting for the Guy Ritchie directorial, she had a moment where she was like “Wow! I am Jasmine!”

“There have been many moments from the get go. I remember when I met Will Smith. We were in a gym and they had like shower cubicles and I had showered, got ready and had put a towel on my head, had no make-up on, I walked out and he was like running up and down! I thought I am going to meet Will Smith.
“So, I just shouted ‘Will!’ And he like turned around and I realised I had such a long way to get to him. I was like this is going to be awkward as he has no idea who I am. He has just seen who is coming to him, who is like some random girl with a towel on her head. So I got to him and I said ‘Oh, I play Jasmine and he was like ‘oohhh!’,”she said.

“He is incredible and he doesn’t make you feel like a weirdo and then Guy Ritchie came and I was standing there with a towel on my head. Will Smith and Guy Ritchie there was like a treadmill and I was so perplexed I was like ‘What is my life?! This is incredible!’ So, there were many surreal moments even at the premiere. I was just like standing thinking ‘Wow! this is just amazing to be part of something so iconic’, I felt very blessed,” she added.
